Nasal Congestion in Babies: Safe Ways to Help Your Child Breathe Better

Nasal congestion in babies is common, particularly during colds and other respiratory infections. Because babies have small nasal passages, even a small amount of mucus can make feeding, sleeping and breathing through the nose more difficult.

Most mild congestion can be managed safely at home. The aim is to loosen the mucus, keep your baby comfortable and watch for signs that they need medical attention.

Safe Ways to Manage Nasal Congestion in Babies

Use Plain Saline Drops

Plain saline nose drops can help loosen thick or dried mucus. Use a product made for babies and follow the instructions provided.

Saline can be particularly helpful shortly before feeding or sleep. Avoid medicated nasal drops unless they have been specifically recommended by your doctor or pharmacist.

Use Gentle Suction

After applying saline, you can gently remove loosened mucus with a bulb syringe or nasal aspirator.

Squeeze a bulb syringe before placing the tip near the nostril, then release it slowly. The tip should not be pushed deeply into the nose.

Suctioning before a feed may help your baby breathe more comfortably while drinking. Avoid suctioning too frequently or forcefully, as this may irritate the inside of the nose.

Keep Your Baby Hydrated

Offer regular breastfeeds or formula feeds. A congested baby may feed more slowly or prefer smaller, more frequent feeds.

Monitor wet nappies and seek medical advice if your baby is drinking much less than usual or producing fewer wet nappies. Reduced feeding can be an early sign that a respiratory illness is becoming more serious.

Consider a Cool Mist Humidifier

A cool mist humidifier may help prevent the air from becoming too dry. Place it safely out of your baby’s reach and clean it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Change the water regularly to prevent mould and bacteria from building up.

Keep Sleep Safe

A congested baby should still be placed flat on their back on a firm, even sleep surface.

Do not raise the cot mattress or place pillows, towels or sleep positioners beneath your baby. Inclining a baby’s sleep surface may cause their head to move into a position that restricts the airway.

The cot should remain free from pillows, loose blankets, soft toys and other soft items.

What Should Parents Avoid?

Do not give babies over-the-counter cough, cold or decongestant medicines unless advised by a healthcare professional.

Avoid placing essential oils, vapour rubs or strong fragrances close to your baby’s nose. Do not expose your baby directly to hot steam or place bowls of hot water nearby, as these may cause burns.

Never insert cotton buds or other objects into the nostrils. Mucus around the outside of the nose can be wiped away gently with a soft, damp cloth.

When Should I Contact a Paediatrician?

Contact your paediatrician if your baby:

  • Is feeding much less than usual

  • Has fewer wet nappies

  • Has a persistent cough or fever

  • Is unusually sleepy or irritable

  • Develops wheezing

  • Has congestion that is worsening or not improving

A baby younger than three months with a temperature of 38°C or higher requires urgent medical assessment.

Seek emergency medical care immediately if your baby is struggling to breathe, breathing very quickly, pulling in around the ribs, having pauses in breathing or developing blue or grey lips.
